New Bern, NC, Military Defense Lawyers

New Bern is a town of just under 30,000 residents located on the Neuse River in North Carolina. The Atlantic Ocean is less than 40 miles away; the one-hour drive along US 70 goes through the Croatan National Forest. While New Bern has four historic districts listed on the National Register of Historic Places, it is perhaps best known for its contribution to culinary history. Caleb Bradham invented the soft drink Pepsi-Cola at his pharmacy in 1898. The Birthplace of Pepsi-Cola Store now operates in Bradham’s former pharmacy. Other highlights of New Bern include art galleries, more than 20 parks, and many opportunities for outdoor recreation. Residents include active-duty military and veterans and their families; Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point is nearby.

Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) Cherry Point

Located 20 miles southeast of New Bern on the Neuse River, MCAS Cherry Point is a primary aviation supply point. It is one of the largest Marine Corps air stations in the U.S. It has support facilities for the Second Marine Aircraft Wing (2nd MAW) and the Atlantic Fleet Marine Force aviation units; Combat Logistics Company 21 supports the 2nd MAW. MCAS Cherry Point also houses the Navy’s Fleet Readiness Center East (FRCE). In addition, Marine Transport Squadron One (VMR 1), which transports key personnel, also provides medical evacuation and search and rescue services to the local community. The Center for Naval Aviation Technical Training Unit (CNATT) conducts specialized training in aviation maintenance on weapons systems.

Like many military bases in the U.S., MCAS Cherry Point was established during World War II; soldiers heading to the action in the Pacific trained here. Service members preparing for action in the Korean War, the Vietnam War, Operation Desert Storm, Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan, and Operation Iraqi Freedom operations were also trained here. Cherry Point’s massive four-point runway system allows for multiple approach and departure advantages. There are also ranges and auxiliary landing fields which provide the opportunity to train for take-offs and landings in regions along a shoreline. The Neuse River runs along the north side of the Air Station, while the Alligator Gut stream flows along the western edge, and Hancock Creek runs along the eastern edge. In addition, many smaller streams and creeks in this swampy region.
