Fort Bragg in North Carolina Becomes Fort Liberty
Until now, all U.S. military installations—estimated to number approximately 5,000—have been named for white men. But in 2021, the U.S. Congress charged the Department of Defense (DOD) with renaming the nine bases named in honor of Confederate Army officers who fought in the the Civil War. In 2022, the DOD Naming Commission completed its work. While eight bases will be renamed for people, including three women, one African American, two African American men, a man of Choctaw descent, and a Hispanic American man, Fort Bragg will be named for a fundamental American value—Liberty.
Fort Bragg (the Future Fort Liberty)
Fort Bragg, a U.S. Army base and one of the largest military installations in the world, is in Fayetteville, North Carolina, about 120 miles from the Atlantic Coast. While Fayetteville celebrates its military connection in many ways, such as its Airborne and Special Operations Museum, it also has a strong arts and culture community.
Fort Bragg covers more than 250 square miles over five counties. It has a daytime population of nearly 190,000, including approximately 48,000 active-duty soldiers. Units at the base include the U.S. Army Forces Command (FORSCOM) Headquarters, the XVII Airborne Corps Headquarters, and the U.S. Army Special Operations Command.
